Recently, at the China Railway Construction's large shield machine base in Tongzhou Bay, a 6.52-meter diameter slurry balance shield machine cutterhead slowly rotated. All performance indicators passed factory acceptance, marking the completion of its remanufacturing in Tongzhou Bay and its imminent deployment in a major local project.

 

 

The "Tongzhou Bay" shield machine, measuring 84 meters long and weighing approximately 500 tons, was remanufactured by China Railway Tunnel Engineering Group Co., Ltd. It will be used in the circulating water intake and drainage project (C1 section) of the Huaneng Nantong (Tongzhou Bay) 2X1000,000 kW large-scale clean and efficient coal-fired power project. As a major provincial project, the Huaneng Tongzhou Bay project commenced construction at the end of last year. It will involve the construction of two 1,000,000 kW ultra-supercritical reheat units with world-leading efficiency and cleanliness, along with a 50,000-ton wharf.

 

 

“The China Railway Construction large shield machine base is only 40 kilometers from the Huaneng Tongzhou Coal Power project site, approximately a 50-minute drive. To better adapt to complex working conditions and tailored to the project's requirements, we transferred the shield machine from Liyang to the Tongzhou Bay shield machine base for overhaul,” introduced Wen Hui, the Party Secretary of the China Railway Tunnel Bureau's Tongzhou Bay project. The project involves underwater single-heading excavation, requiring consecutive crossings of two sea embankments and underwater reception at sea, with the deepest point 20 meters below sea level. The construction is highly challenging and risky. To ensure construction safety, the contractor commissioned an authoritative institution to inspect the shield machine's main bearings, gearbox, propulsion system, personnel compartment, and pressure maintenance system, ensuring the stability and reliability of core components. Furthermore, based on the tunnel's geological conditions, the cutterhead underwent flaw detection and repair, and the cutter selection and configuration were optimized to reduce the risk of cutter changes between sections and ensure construction safety.

Tongzhou Bay, with its unique geographical location and excellent business environment, has attracted major industrial projects worth billions in recent years, creating a cluster effect. According to statistics, 22 major projects have signed agreements to settle in the Tongzhou Bay High-end Equipment Coastal Industrial Park. These projects cover shipbuilding and marine engineering equipment, new energy equipment, rail transit equipment, photovoltaic glass and components, and new metal materials, among other large-scale import and export, ship-in and ship-out coastal manufacturing industries. The close upstream and downstream synergy enhances the operational efficiency of enterprises and projects in the area. Among them, the China Railway Construction large shield machine base, the only large shield machine base approved by China Railway Construction, has been committed to integrated services for the tracking, maintenance, and management of shield equipment since its establishment in 2022, with a cumulative output of 10 shield machines.

It is understood that the "Tongzhou Bay" slurry balance shield machine will be disassembled at the factory and transported to the construction site for assembly and debugging in the near future. Initial excavation is expected to begin in October, ushering in a new phase for the Huaneng Tongzhou Bay coal-fired power project.
